Welcome to In the Know at Genus, the podcast that brings you practical ideas to support your growth—both at work and in life. In today’s episode, we’re building on our conversation about AI by focusing on a powerful tool that many of us at Genus will be hearing more about: Microsoft Copilot. You might have seen it mentioned in emails or meetings—or even had a glimpse of it in Word, Excel, or Teams. But what exactly is it? And what can it do for you? Let’s break it down. Microsoft Copilot is an AI assistant built right into the Microsoft tools many of us already use—like Word, Outlook, Excel and Teams. But instead of simply helping with spelling or formatting, it can now do much more. Copilot listens to your prompts and helps with things like drafting documents, summarising long email chains, picking out action points, and making sense of data.
Here’s a quick example. Imagine you’ve just come out of a busy meeting, and you’re expected to share a summary with your team. You’ve barely had time to collect your thoughts—let alone write something clear and useful. Copilot can pull together a concise overview of the meeting for you, highlighting key points and action items, giving you a starting point you can edit and send in minutes. Or maybe you’re doing research online—perhaps looking into industry trends, best practices, or relevant case studies. If you’re using the Microsoft Edge browser, Copilot is built right in. You can ask it to summarise a webpage, pull out key insights, or even compare content across tabs—all without switching tools or losing focus. These small wins can make a big difference across your day—and they’re built right into the tools you already use. Or perhaps you’ve been asked to create a report or document based on a few notes or bullet points. Copilot can help turn those fragments into a structured first draft—saving you time and helping you focus on the content, rather than where to begin. What’s exciting is that this kind of support is available across the different tools you already use—so you don’t need to learn a new system. It’s like having a digital colleague ready to help with the heavy lifting, freeing you up to think, decide, and lead. That said, Copilot isn’t perfect. It’s there to support your thinking—not to replace it, and we need to be ready for those occasions. Other times, it might surprise you with something brilliant. The key is to treat it like a teammate—one you guide and review, rather than rely on blindly.
Here’s something to try this week: Next time you’re writing something from scratch—whether it’s an email, a draft report, or even meeting notes—ask Copilot to generate a first version for you. Then, take a few minutes to review and improve it. Notice what it gets right, what it misses, and whether it helped you work faster or more clearly. Even if you don’t use what it creates word-for-word, the process can still save you time—and spark new ideas you might not have thought of on your own. At Genus, we’re committed to exploring tools that help us work smarter and more collaboratively. Microsoft Copilot is one of those tools—and like anything new, it works best when we’re open to learning through use. We’ve included some links in the podcast description with simple guides to help you explore. And if you discover something useful, share it with your team. The more we learn from each other, the more value we get from this kind of innovation. Thanks for joining us for this episode of In the Know at Genus. In our next episode, we’ll continue our Personal Development & Growth series with a focus on self-directed learning—what it looks like, and how to make it part of your everyday growth. Until then, keep exploring, stay curious and remember, sometimes the best way to learn is simply by giving it a go.
